Ihr gutbürgerliches Leben ist am ehesten charakterisiert durch das, was sie alles nicht getan hat: sie hat nicht studiert und nicht gearbeitet, sie hat ihre Kinder nicht vernachlässigt und ihren Mann nicht mit dem Künstler Jakob betrogen, sie hat der Schwiegermutter nicht die Stirn geboten und stellt noch immer nicht den Anspruch, ins Grundbuch der Jugendstilvilla eingetragen zu werden. Mit Zynismus und verhaltener Selbstreflexion beobachtet sie das Altern der Frauen um sie herum. Und sie beobachtet ihre Kinder, vor allem Franziska, 35, die zu Wutausbrüchen neigt, mit den Anforderungen der Gesellschaft an ihre Mutterrolle hadert und die theoretische Gleichberechtigung von Mann und Frau im Alltag nicht einlösen kann. Auch sie hat ihre Visionen nicht verfolgt, weder beruflich noch privat, und begnügt sich mit einem fast fertigen Studium und einem fast geliebten Mann. Es scheint, als habe sich dieser zahnlose Feminismus von einer Generation an die nächste vererbt. Gertraud Klemm, die mit einem Kapitel aus diesem Roman den Publikumspreis in Klagenfurt gewann, schildert eine gesellschaftliche Situation, in der mit viel 'ja – aber' die wichtigen Entscheidungen verschoben und verhindert werden, und ihr Blick auf die Lage ist gnadenlos, bissig und (aus Verzweiflung?) wahninnig komisch.
