In seinem ersten Drama Dantons Tod (1835) zeichnet Georg Büchner ein düsteres Bild der Französischen Revolution. Er dramatisiert die Ereignisse zweier Wochen im März und April 1794 als Auseinandersetzung zwischen dem 'tugendhaften' Robespierre und dem 'sittenlosen' Danton. Büchners revolutionäres Stück wurde wegen seiner politischen Schärfe und mitunter drastischen Sinnlichkeit zu Lebzeiten des Autors nur zensiert gedruckt. Weil es schonungslos das Scheitern einer humanistischen Idee zeigt, ohne die Idee selbst zu verleugnen, ist Dantons Tod ein Revolutionsstück von ungebrochener Aktualität. Text in neuer Rechtschreibung. - Der Text folgt der historisch-kritischen Ausgabe mit Quellendokumentation und Kommentar ('Marburger Ausgabe').
