Angela Liebetanz, bis vor kurzem Polizistin, will sich verändern und verabschiedet sich von dem aufreibenden Job zwischen Leben und Tod. Sie trennt sich von ihrem Ehemann und zieht ins brandenburgische Heidesaum. Dort verwirklicht sie ihren Traum und eröffnet ein Café, das schnell zur Attraktion wird. Als Angela am Fluss Kräuter sammelt, entdeckt sie einen Gummistiefel, in dem noch ein Fuß steckt. Angela zieht daran und findet die Leiche eines ortsbekannten Anglers, der durchaus nicht bei allen beliebt war. Kurze Zeit später erfährt sie, dass auch ein Camper, der in der Nähe ihres Cafés ein Lager aufgeschlagen hat, verschwunden ist. Diese vermeintlichen Zufälle kann Angela nicht auf sich beruhen lassen. Sie beginnt zu ermitteln und stößt bald auf ein finsteres Geheimnis der Heidesaumer.
