September 1845. Zwei Pferde ziehen einen Leiterwagen mit wenigen Fahrgästen durch das nebelverhangene Watt von Föhr nach Amrum. Beinahe wären sie an der Leiche von Busso Dahl, dem Postläufer, vorbeigefahren. Er wurde von einer Harpune getroffen, mit einer Axt erschlagen und mit Holzpfählen im Watt angepflockt. Auf dem Gespann befindet sich auch der Reiseschriftsteller Georg Kohl, der die Insel Amrum erforschen möchte. Doch der Anblick der Leiche im Watt lässt ihn nicht los. Und so versucht er mit Hilfe von Dina Martensen und dem Herumstreuner Nickels, den Mörder zu finden. Dabei stoßen sie auf eine alte Geschichte und ein dunkles Geheimnis und bringen sich selbst in Gefahr.
