Am Ende war das Imperiu wohl einfach zu groß. War es unregierbar geworden und sein Schutz zu teuer - eine Zwangslage, der auch andere Imperien, etwa das britische und das osmanische, nicht gewachsen waren. Und so mussten die spanischen Könige des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts mehr oder minder hilflos mit zussehen, wie überall im Reich Konflikte aufflammten, wie astronomisch hohe Rüstungsausgaben ihre Staatsfinanzen ruinierten und ihnen andere Monarchen die Hegemonialstellung in Europa streitig machten. Im Jahre 1808 schließlich, als Napoleons Franzosen in Madrid einmarschierten, war Spanien de facto führungslos, militärisch abgewirtschaftet und auf den Rang einer zweitklassigen Macht zurückgefallen.
