Das Werk beruht auf seinen Briefen, Notizen sowie seinem »Tagebuch der Italienischen Reise für Frau von Stein«, entstand jedoch erst dreißig Jahre später: Zwischen 1813 und 1817 überarbeitete Goethe seine Aufzeichnungen. – Mit einer kompakten Biographie des Autors.
