Die Handlung setzt ein im November 2001 und erzählt in drei Teilen, wie im Lauf der Nullerjahre aus Egomanie und mit den Widerständen wachsender Weltmissachtung, der Verachtung der Arbeit, der Menschen, der Gegenwart und des Rechts, ganz langsam und für Holtrop selber nie richtig klar erkennbar, ein totaler Absturz ins wirtschaftliche Aus, das persönliche Desaster und das gesellschaftliche Nichts wird, so abgrundtief und endgültig, wie ein früherer Aufstieg unwiderstehlich, glorios und plötzlich gewesen war.
