Kants »Kritik der reinen Vernunft« erschien 1781 in erster und 1787 in zweiter Auflage – und gilt seitdem als einer der Meilensteine philosophischen Denkens und als Beginn der modernen Philosophie. Das Werk sei eine Kritik »des Vernunftvermögens überhaupt, in Ansehung aller Erkenntnisse, zu denen sie, unabhängig von aller Erfahrung, streben mag«. Sie kümmere sich um die »Möglichkeit oder Unmöglichkeit einer Metaphysik überhaupt und die Bestimmung sowohl der Quellen, als des Umfanges und der Grenzen derselben«, so Kant im Vorwort. Damit schuf er eine der einflussreichsten Schriften u. a. für die moderne Erkenntnistheorie, Metaphysik und auch Religionsphilosophie.
